Oppert, Jules

(1825-1905)
   French philologist, orientalist and archaeologist. Born in Hamburg, he settled in France early in his life. He became an authority on Old Persian and Assyrian, and in 1851 he went on an expedition to explore Mesopotamia, where he identified the site of ancient Babylon. In 1874 he became professor of Assyrian philology and archaeology at the College de France. He wrote studies on various aspects of oriental scholarship. He was an active member of Jewish communal and scholarly bodies.
